Getting Kids Interested in Local Foods
You may have made the decision to eat local as much as possible but are now wondering how to get your children involved. Although it may be difficult to get your children to eat a nutritious meal, let alone unprocessed and local, the benefits of teaching them early the importance will pay off later in their lives. Try the following suggestions to engage your child in thefamilies’ new local food adventure.
•Turn them into mini-farmers. Growing produce does not have to be a large ordeal. Just planting a single vegetable plant in the yard or planter will be enough to teach your child about where their food comes from and connect them to their local food system.
•Allow them to help shop with you at the Farmers Market. Have them look at what’s available and help make decisions on what produce to choose. Engaging them in this process is the best lesson they could have on produce seasonality.
Make them a Chef. Once they grow their own vegetables, select them at the market, or pick them at the farm, next have them create their own meal. Most kids are interested in helping out in the kitchen and the benefits are great.Even though it may be a little messy, benefits such as developing a sense of independence and self-confidence as well as learning about the foods they are about to eat, are worth it in the end.
