US Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared August 2-8 National Farmers Market Week across the country. “Farmers Markets benefit communities by offering healthy, wholesome food while local farmers and ranchers benefit from new ways to present their products to customers,” said USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack in Washington, DC.

Locally, the Department of Agriculture has featured Red Stick Farmers Market in this week’s Market Bulletin publication in celebration of National Farmers Market Week. “It’s important to support your farmers markets because it’s a great way to buy fresh, Louisiana grown fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products among other things. It’s a way to visit with our local producers and support the local economy, not to mention all the added health benefits of buying fresh food,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Mike Strain.

Red Stick Farmers Market kicks off the celebration on the first Saturday in August with our Everything Eggplant celebration featuring BREADA Board member and Ruffino’s Executive chef Peter Scafani as the special guest for the Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration.

We will wrap up the celebration on August 8th with complimentary “I love Red Stick Farmers Market” fans for the first 500 customers who stop by the Market Information Booth. Chef Jim Urdiales will be the guest chef for “Super Salsa” cooking demonstration at 10 am inside Main Street Market. The kids can also enjoy a special art activity as part of National Farmers Market Week.
