Our Programs

Small Farmer Support

BREADA provides grant support to small farmers who experience loss from both natural disasters and personal tragedies. The Louisiana Small Farm Survival Fund was established with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation in 2005 to provide assistance to Louisiana’s small farm and seafood enterprises that have been affected by natural disasters.

Red Stick Farmers Market

Red Stick Farmers is a producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. During peak seasons, we operate up to five weekly locations of the Red Stick Farmers Markets. The Markets provide vital economic opportunities for local farmers, keeping our local food system healthy, strong and vibrant.

Main Street Market

Main Street Market, located in downtown Baton Rouge, features locally owned restaurants and specialty shops housed in a public marketplace setting. Main Street Market is open Monday through Saturday serving coffee, breakfast and lunch for downtown residents, workers and visitors.

Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market

The Red Stick Mobile Farmers Market program began in 2012 to serve neighborhoods in North and Old South Baton Rouge with limited access to fresh food.

Red Stick Sprouts

Red Stick Sprouts is a youth program for children ages 2-12 that provides valuable food education. The program connects program participants to local farmers and agriculture and educates them about where their food comes from through fun food-related activities at the market.

Kids receive a market tote bag and $2 in market tokens to spend with local farmers. Each time they visit the Market, they receive a kid-friendly recipe and an additional $2 in market tokens. To date, over 2,900 kids have joined the Sprouts program and have been empowered to make their own healthy food choices.

Nutrition Education & Outreach

The Red Stick Farmers Market hosts cooking demonstrations, food sampling, and supplies recipe cards to encourage shoppers to buy fresh, local produce.

Saturday’s “Fresh from the Market” cooking demonstration located inside Main Street Market, invites local chefs to present seasonal recipes and introduce shoppers to the variety found at the Farmers Market.

Farm to School Program

Ensuring the next generation of Louisianans knows where their food comes from, BREADA coordinates youth programming at its farmer's markets, as well as a Farm to School program currently taking place in six Baton Rouge area public schools. The Farm to School program brings a live farmers market experience to each campus as well as cooking demos that show kids how to transform fresh produce into new dishes.
