You might know BREADA as the nonprofit behind the Red Stick Farmers Market, but did you know we also have a farm to school program (and much more)? Our 225Gives campaign is focused on just that this year; we hope to raise $10,000 to support the expansion of Farm Fresh Kids. Your donation will help us maintain gardens at local schools, offer hands-on tastings and cooking lessons for elementary students, and bring a farmers market experience to more than 1,000 kids.

BREADA’s Farm Fresh Kids program emphasizes both healthy eating and the science of agriculture for elementary students. Our staff maintains gardens at local schools where kids get to participate in the planting, growing, and harvesting process, then they get to taste the foods they grew, which are often new to them.

A portable teaching kitchen, the Charlie Cart, allows us to host classes for up to 30 school children at a time, exposing them to interactive cooking lessons and integrating math and science concepts from the classroom into fun, outdoor activities. This program began in one North Baton Rouge school in 2016, expanded to three schools in 2021, and is still growing.

“The classes helped change my mind about shiitake mushrooms and Brussels sprouts. I think I wanted to try things because I saw where the vegetables came from and got to chop them up.”
-Felix, third grade student
